Still Accepting Teams Supporting Take Stock in Children

World War II Navy Veteran “Bud” Smith will start the pack of runners and walkers supporting Take Stock in Children on Saturday (Dec. 7), Pearl Harbor Day, at 4:30 p.m. for the “Run 4 the Future”  at the Melbourne campus of Eastern Florida State College.

State Attorney Phil Archer, TSIC Board Member and “Race Director” for the event, said the scheduling of the race commemorates all veterans who exemplify service to their country. And, he said, the fundraising for scholarships that Take Stock In Children performs through events like the race shows that same commitment to country.

“The money we raise today and through other events goes directly to scholarships for college for students who might not otherwise be able to pursue higher education. Just as our veterans protected our shores with their lives, the education of our youth protects our future,” Archer said.

While more than 400 individuals and team members have signed up for the race, anyone who wants to join in is still welcome, Archer said. Simply go to TSICrun4thefuture.com. Archer issued a challenge to all public agencies a few weeks ago and several teams have formed to try and beat students who might not otherwise be able to pursue higher education the State Attorney’s Office team.

Participation in the race comes with a couple of bonuses also. An outdoor barbeque provided by the Brevard Sheriff’s Office Agricultural Unit, the National Anthem sung by Jenna Ivey, Sheriff Wayne Ivey’s daughter, and goodie bags crammed with running supplies will all be rewards for participants. Mother Nature also appears to be cooperating and runners/walkers should be able to enjoy both the bucolic beauty of the campus and a delightful family and fun evening.

The race will be managed by The Running Zone in Melbourne.
