News Release - March 16, 2015

Three Brevard County students’ drug-free posters were selected this week to be featured on the covers of Student Planners for the 2015/2016 school year. Scarlett Frattin, a 2ndgrader at Tropical Elementary will have her artwork displayed on the cover of the K-2ndgrade planner; Fairglen Elementary 6thgrader Haley Summerlin’s poster will appear on the cover of the 3rd-6thgrade planner; and Victoria Rios, an 8thgrader from Southwest Middle School, will see her poster on the cover of the 7th-8thgrade planner.

This innovative project is headed by State Attorney Phil Archer and Brevard County Sheriff Wayne Ivey. Working in partnership with the Brevard County School Board, students were asked to submit artwork with healthy, drug-free messages for the contest. State Attorney Archer and Sheriff Ivey praised area teachers for their participation and support of the program.

“Activities like this utilize the right messengers to carry the right messages. After seeing all the submitted artwork and their positive messages, we know we have a great future ahead of us,” said State Attorney Archer.

Judges included John Torres, Florida Today; Janice Kershaw, Brevard Schools Foundation; Bridget Geiger, Brevard County School Board; Pablo Remonsellez, Brevard Cultural Alliance; Commander Mike Demorat, Brevard County Sheriff’s Office; and State Attorney Archer.

Winning students will be recognized at a school board meeting. The planners will be printed and ready for distribution to Brevard County public school students in grades Kindergarten through 8 at the beginning of the 2015/2016 school year.
