An Antidote for those Turkey Pounds;

A Prescription for Family Fun—“Run 4 The Future” 5K Walk/Run!

Come join State Attorney Phil Archer and Santa Claus as they lead the “Run 4 The Future” 5K Walk/Run this Saturday (Dec. 3) at 4 p.m. at the Wickham Park Main Pavilion.

Santa is the honorary starter and sticks around to shake the hands of participants crossing the finish line.

“What a way to cement the “Nice” rating we’ll all need on December 25.” Archer said. “The kids love it!”

The event benefits the Take Stock in Children Program, a drop-out prevention, mentoring and scholarship program for children in the Brevard Public Schools. Students in grades K-12 as well as their family members, runners, walkers, and athletes of all ages are welcome, Archer said.

“Because of the late afternoon start, it’s easy for the entire family to participate. Combined with the Christmas theme and a delicious barbeque dinner that comes with the registration packet, it is a great family event,” Archer said.

Previous year’s races have drawn hundreds of families and thousands of participants to the beautiful winding open trail through the edge of the park adjacent to the Eastern Florida State College Melbourne campus at 3865 North Wickham Road.

While the registration fee benefits the Take Stock in Children Program, it also covers the BBQ dinner and awards ceremony in the Park Pavilion immediately following the conclusion of the race. Medals will be distributed to the top three male and female contestants in 16 age groups beginning with ages 8 and under, all the way up to the 75-plus group.

The race is managed by the Running Zone at 3696 N. Wickham Road, Melbourne, where participants may register and pick up their packets on Friday, Dec. 2, from 10 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Participants may also register on line at https://secure.runningzone.com/Race/FL/Melbourne/Run4TheFuture5Kand the day of the race at the park Main Pavilion from 3 until 3:45 p.m.

The three public schools with the highest number of registered participants will also benefit from an additional cash prize. Registrations received prior to race day for adults cost $25; day of the race are $30. Students from Kindergarten to the 12thgrade are only $15. The event is rain or shine, and no refunds will be issued.
