September 22, 2020 -Brevard Grand Jury Indicts Two for First-Degree Murder

On Monday (Sept 21), the Brevard County Grand Jury indicted Quantay BYROM (22) and Edward SLATTER (44) for First-Degree Premeditated Murder in separate incidents.

The first case took place on February 25th, 2020, when Rickie Gilbert (62) was shot and killed by a stray bullet while driving his car in Titusville. Titusville Police identified Quantay BYROM as the driver of a car that was targeting and firing at a third car, when a bullet penetrated the windshield of Gilbert's uninvolved vehicle, and struck him. After hearing testimony from a Titusville Police detective and crime scene investigator, the Grand Jury indicted BYROM on one (1) count of First-Degree Premeditated Murder (CF).

In the second case, the deceased body of Sarah Mansfield (25) was discovered on March 4th, 2020, in a vacant residence in Melbourne that she had been trespassing in with her boyfriend Edward SLATTER. After SLATTER told police that Mansfield had been using drugs and passed out, the Medical Examiner identified the cause of death as murder by strangulation and blunt force trauma. After hearing testimony from the Brevard County Medical Examiner, a Melbourne Police detective and Melbourne crime scene investigator, the Grand Jury indicted SLATTER for one (1) count of First-Degree Premeditated Murder (CF).

Both BYROM and SLATTER remain in custody at the Brevard County Jail on No Bond. No trial date has been set in either case and both defendants had previously entered pleas of not guilty, waiving arraignment in their cases.
