July 28, 2008 Seminole County Grand Jury Returns First-Degree Murder Indictment on Fidel Alejandro Juarez/Avila

The Seminole County Grand Jury today returned an indictment charging Fidel Alejandro Juarez-Avila, 28, with one count each of first-degree felony murder and aggravated child abuse (causing great bodily harm) for the June 25 death of his daughter.

Juarez-Avila was arrested by Sanford Police officers two days after he took his 14-month old daughter to the hospital, claiming she had fallen off the bed while under his care. The child, Aurelia Juarez, was dead on arrival at the hospital from multiple blows to her head and abdomen.

The child's mother is in prison and Juarez-Avila was caring for the baby and her 4- and 8-year-old brothers.

The Grand Jury heard from a Sanford Police detective and the Medical Examiner before returning the indictment. Juarez-Avila remains in the Seminole County Jail without bond.
