Caught on video, Jamalah Lewis convicted of attempted first-degree murder

SANFORD –A Lake Mary man who shot and wounded his live-in girlfriend while being recorded on doorbell video was convicted Jan. 15 of attempted first-degree murder.

A Seminole County jury returned a guilty verdict against JAMALAH S. LEWIS following a trial presented by Assistant State Attorneys Scott Wood and Richard Babcock.

On May 24, 2020, Lewis fired a .40 caliber handgun at Shameka Gordon inside their Chessington Circle townhouse before chasing her out the front door and shooting at her six more times from the porch as she fled. Gordon suffered three bullet wounds and was cared for by neighbors who called 911.

The fact that Lewis paused briefly on the porch to wait for a clearer shot, as shown on video, was evidence of premeditation, prosecutors said.

“Pulling the trigger multiple times, certainly there’s time to reflect on killing another human being,” Wood told jurors in closing arguments. “Thank God, he failed, or this would be an entirely different case.”

Lake Mary Police caught up with Lewis and arrested him after witnesses spotted him fleeing in a black Ford Explorer.

Police recovered a bullet from the victim and casings from the porch and interior of the home that matched Lewis’ gun, Babcock said.

Lewis did not attend his trial, refusing transportation to the courthouse from the Seminole County jail.

Circuit Judge Melissa Souto scheduled Lewis’ sentencing for Feb. 18.
