Man sentenced to 12 years for fatally striking bicyclist while drunk on A1A

A man who hit and killed a bicyclist in Cape Canaveral while driving drunk on S.R. A1A has been sentenced to 12 years in prison for DUI manslaughter.

GLENN W. BRIMMER, 46, also was ordered at his Nov. 20 sentencing to pay $750 to reimburse funeral expenses for his victim, John D. Perrin.

A Brevard County Jury convicted Brimmer in September based on evidence and testimony presented by Assistant State Attorneys Bernadette Serafinowicz and Greg Hansen. Brimmer, of Ocoee, drank at the Cocoa Beach Pier the evening of March 2, 2018, before driving his Hyundai Veloster north on S.R. A1A and striking Perrin, 66, from behind.

The case took seven years to bring to trial due to court closures during the COVID pandemic and the more than 40 motions by Brimmer’s defense attorneys who sought to dismiss the case or suppress evidence then appealed after not prevailing with those.

Evidence included Brimmer’s blood-alcohol content level of .23, more than twice the state’s legal limit. Jurors also heard an audio recording of Brimmer’s field sobriety exercises, which were administered by Brevard County sheriff’s deputies. Brimmer was heard laughing and saying, “Let’s do it!” – then having trouble following deputies’ instructions.
