Seminole Co. man sentenced to life for carjacking truck, running down girlfriend

A Sanford man will spend life in prison for stealing an acquaintance’s truck then running over and killing his girlfriend with it in Lake Mary in 2021.

Toivante Williams

TOIVANTE “TOBY’ WILLIAMS, 31, was sentenced Aug. 7 for the second-degree murder of Katrina Redden and the armed carjacking of a Ford F-150 pickup truck from Javier Martinez. The three had been riding around Seminole County the night of May 24, 2021, when Williams angrily turned on them.

Seminole County prosecutors Mitch Ruark, Domenick Leo and Paul Brill made the case that Williams should receive maximum sentences as a Prison Releasee Reoffender because he had committed those crimes within three years of his release from a previous prison term.

At trial, they also convicted Williams of trafficking more than 14 grams of methamphetamine and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon because he had brought the drugs and a handgun with him the night of the murder.

Redden’s family attended the sentencing hearing in Sanford where the victim’s mother, aunt, and one of her children spoke.

“The pain never left,” Redden’s daughter, Deasia, said. “He should care about the life he stole, the family he broke, the pain he caused. She mattered. She still matters.”

Circuit Judge Jessica Recksiedler sentenced Williams to mandatory life imprisonment (day for day) for second-degree murder and carjacking, plus 30 years in prison and a $50,000 fine for the other charges.
