If You Are
Sexually Assaulted

Get to a safe place. If you feel that you may still be in danger, call 911.

If you are injured or feel that you may have been drugged, go to the nearest Emergency Room.

Brevard County Rape HELPLINE number: (321) 784-HELP (4357)

After a sexual assault, your first instinct will be to clean yourself. It is extremely important that you do NOT shower, bathe, douche, brush your teeth, wash your hands or change clothes. If you can avoid it, do not go to the bathroom. Do not eat, drink or take any medication including Tylenol or aspirin, unless life sustaining.

The Sexual Assault Victim Services (SAVS) Helpline is available 24 hours per day, 7 days per week, and is staffed with victim advocates who can coordinate forensic exams after a sexual assault. The Helpline also provides crisis intervention, referrals for counseling, support groups, and many community resources. Trained victim advocates are available 24/7 to accompany uninjured males and females over age 13 to the SAVS forensic exam center for evidence collection by a trained Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners (SANE). Advocates are also available to accompany victims to local hospitals for exams.

It is your right to have a forensic sexual assault exam free of charge, regardless of your decision to report the crime to the police. If you are reporting, the police should be called as soon as possible. Reporting attacks is an important part of ending violence and the first step at holding offenders accountable.

The Women’s Center is the Certified Rape Crisis Center for Brevard County. The offices are open Monday-Friday from 9:00am-4:00pm. Please call (321) 242-3110 to reach the Melbourne office or (321) 607-6811 for the Titusville office to find out more about the services we provide.
