Seminole County Grand Jury Indicts
Sanford Man in Toddler’s Death
The Seminole County Grand Jury issued a first-degree felony murder indictment today against Matthew McCague, 28, 1009 East 2nd St., Sanford, for the July 8 death of Yvonne Bailey, a 22-month-old child for whom he and his wife were caretakers.
The grand jury also indicted McCague on aggravated child abuse. Assistant State Attorney Stacey Salmons said autopsy reports showed the child died of closed head injuries due to blunt impacts to the head or being shaken violently on July 6. McCague had called 911 because the child, for whom he had been the sole caretaker for the past several hours, had suffered a seizure. The child had lived with the couple for about two weeks.
Grand jurors heard testimony from a medical examiner and a Sanford Police Department Investigator before returning the indictment. McCague was arrested on August 14 and has been held in the Seminole County Jail since then, said Salmons.
