August 6, 2024 - Grand Jury Indicts Julia EGLER and Brandon CAIN for First-Degree Murder

Tuesday (Aug 6), the Brevard County Grand Jury issued First-Degree Premeditated Murder indictments for two defendants in separate incidents.

Julia EGLER (16), was indicted for two (2) counts of First-Degree Premeditated Murder (CF), in connection to the deaths of her mother, Kelley McCollom (38), and Matthew Szejnrok (22).

On July 7, 2024, Palm Bay Police responded to a 9-11 call from Julia EGLER reporting a burglary in progress at her home on Benchor Rd NW. Upon arrival, police found the deceased bodies of McCollom and her friend Szejnrok in the residence. Initially claiming an intruder had broken in and shot the victims, EGLER later admitted that was a fabrication, and she had shot both victims when they returned home. Arrested by police as a juvenile, prosecutors will pursue prosecution of EGLER as an adult. EGLER is not eligible to receive the death penalty by law as pronounced by the US Supreme Court and Florida Statute.

Brandon CAIN (23), was indicted for First-Degree Premeditated Murder (CF) in connection to the death of his father Daniel Cain Jr (52).

On July 3, 2024, Palm Bay Police responded to a home on Danbury St. SW after Brandon CAIN called 9-11 and told dispatchers he had shot his father. Daniel Cain Jr. was found deceased in front of the home, with BRANDON claiming he acted in self-defense during a domestic argument. However, security video showed Daniel seated outside alone when BRANDON exited the home concealing a firearm behind his back. When unarmed Daniel stood up, BRANDON shot him.

The Grand Jury heard testimony from Investigators with the Palm Bay Police Department and the Associate Medical Examiner, before returning with the indictments.

Both defendants are being held without bond. In the coming days EGLER will be transferred from the Juvenile Detention Center to the Brevard County Jail where CAIN is already being held.  No trial date has been set in these cases. Please consult the Brevard Clerk of Courts website for updates on future court appearances.
